Smart Clients Get Results With EBA

We’ve delivered high quality writing, editing, and project management services to a variety of clients recently:

—Our work on the highly competitive Smart Growth program of Chicago Community Trust for a small music education non-profit opened the door to significant funding for capacity building.
—We kicked off the inaugural grants management program for that same organization, submitting applications for $165,000 in private foundation grants over the past six months.
—New Venture Advisors delivered two feasibility assessments and a business plan for sustainable food enterprise clients with our writing and editing support.
—Sunshine Enterprises applied for a $150,000 federal grant from the Small Business Administration to expand its business incubator program on the south side. We provided project management and budget consultation for this complicated application, and wrote all the narratives. (We’ll keep you posted on the outcome!)

Branching Out

We recently helped a consulting company develop a 40-page market assessment for a non-profit food hub in Casper, Wyoming. We helped the same company write a 30-page business plan for a food hub in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland. EBA helps two new clients meet their goals.

We recently put our wordsmithing skills to good use for two new clients, who now have updated narratives that they will be able to use for fund raising, marketing, and communication with constitutents.

We created a case statement for South Side Community Federal Credit Union (SSCFCU) around their innovative Wealth and Wellness Initiative which addresses the twin social concerns of poverty and poor health among residents of low-income communities. This document lays out the need statement, organization background and capacity, the plan to address the needs, and the cost of the Initiative. SSCFCU will use the narratives within the case statement to build awareness, develop marketing materials, and raise funds to support the program. 

Ultimately, the program aims to help participants increase their savings, improve their credit scores, and measurably improve their overall health and wellness. There’s no other program like this on the south side, and we’re optimistic that SSCFCU will be able to use the case statement to attract funding to grow the initiative.

EBA also recently helped the Chicago West Community Music Center (CWCMC) apply for funding from the Smart Growth grant program of Chicago Community Trust. Smart Growth is a “four-year capacity-building program that helps small arts and cultural organizations engage their board and staff in strengthening management practices that effectively support their mission, enabling them to contribute to the community, pay a living wage to artists and staff and remain resilient in the face of economic and demographic shifts.”

Our work for CWCMC helped clarify their mission statement, polish their organizational history and program narratives, and made the case for the unique work that the organization does to bring music and music education to west side communities. CWCMC is the only arts organization located in Garfield Park. The dedicated founders, who grew up in neighboring North Lawndale, are talented musicians who created the organization to address social and economic challenges through music.

Prepare for your next résumé before you need it.

Prepare for your next job search and résumé update now by keeping detailed records of your accomplishments at your current job.

Keep track of measurable outcomes: how much money did you raise? How many new clients did you bring in? How much money did you save your organization by implementing new procedures? How did the processes that you created and implemented in your job improve the bottom line for your company?

Record numbers that reflect on scope of your responsibilities and your performance: the number of people you supervise, the turnover rate, project or organizational budgets, number of clients served.

Use your organization’s employee evaluation process to help you track your accomplishments–and save copies of these documents so you can refer to them later on when you’re ready to update your resume. If your company doesn’t have an evaluation process that tracks your professional goals and accomplishments, create your own.

I use a weekly task list to track my projects; at the end of the week, I update and print a new task list, and put the old one in a folder labeled with the fiscal year. At the end of the year, I cull through these lists and update my résumé with my accomplishments for the year.

And finally, during the year keep an annotated list of the accomplishments that you are most proud of. Describe what you did, and include details and data. If you worked with a team to upgrade the IT system, for example, jot down the timeline, the cost, the cost savings, and the benefits to the organization.

Data will make your résumé stronger.

Game On.

I took a little break to bring in a stable paycheck for a coupla years, but could not stand to be away from the wacky world of freelancing any longer.

So now you can start calling me for quotes again on any nagging writing projects that you need help on–not because you’re not a great writer yourself, but because you’re too busy. Or your writer just went on maternity leave. Or you’re going backpacking in the Himalayas and you want that project to get done while you’re gone. Or…whatever.

Résumés, grant proposals, web site text revisions, annual report profiles. I’ll write pretty much anything. Don’t worry about whether I know your field or not–I’m a whiz at picking up the lingo and quickly grasping the finer points of, say, financial derivatives or the transportation construction industry.

Another Happy Client

My client Jennifer landed a gig with her dream company this week after we gave her a stand-out résumé and compelling cover letter.  Here’s what she wrote:

My Certification, Your Security

I recently obtained certification from the Professional Association of Résumé Writers as a Certified Professional Résumé Writer. For you, this means that my experience, knowledge, and ability as a résumé writer has been independently confirmed by a comprehensive testing process.

It does NOT mean that I will be raising my rates, only that you have one more reason to trust that I can deliver what I promise: A high-level résumé that will make you stand out to prospective employers.

Only six other résumé service providers in Chicago have the CPRW credential; and only 25 in all of Illinois.

I’m still working on making this web site fully functional, with writing samples, references, and a full description of all services we provide. Need a Freelance Writer?

I just learned a little about search engine optimization at a meeting of the Independent Writers of Chicago last night.  What I learned is that I’m pretty much doing every wrong here at the EBA blog.

So basically, I am one workshop above SEO-illiterate; but it does not change the fact that I can write proposal narratives that sing–and more importantly, that bring in funding!  And I can put together a resume that will get you through the door for an interview.

The EBA blog exists to help you find a writer who can understand the project, research and interview to get the information, and write the words that compel, persuade, edify, and inform.  We’re still a work in progress, so check back often.
